If you're lucky enough to be staying in the Algarve, you'll know just how much there is to explore in this southern region of Portugal.
This week, we share our list of day trip ideas from the Algarve:
1. Seville, Spain
Just a 2.5 hour drive from the Algarve, Seville is one of Spain's most vibrant cities. The iconic Alcázar Palace is a must-see and don’t miss the Seville Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. Before heading back to the Algarve, stroll through Plaza de España.
2. Alte
Nestled in the hills of the Algarve, Alte is a small, traditional village. It is typically known for its crystal-clear springs, Alte offers a peaceful escape from the busier beach towns. We recommend visiting Fonte Pequena, a natural spring or taking a short hike to Cascata do Pego do Inferno, a beautiful waterfall hidden in the hills. Alte is the perfect spot to immerse yourself in local culture and enjoy the beauty of the Algarve’s countryside.
3. Vicentine Coast Natural Park
For nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, a trip to the Vicentine Coast Natural Park is an absolute must. This protected area stretches along the western Algarve. The Praia da Marinha is often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. If you enjoy hiking, the Rota Vicentina is a fantastic trail system that takes you through spectacular coastal scenery.
4. Lagos
Lagos, located in the western Algarve, is a town that blends history, culture and natural beauty. If you’re interested in history Fortress of Ponta da Bandeira and the beautiful Igreja de Santo António are must-see attractions. Lagos is home to some of the Algarve’s most beautiful beaches, such as Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo. For something more adventurous, boat trips are available to explore the stunning sea caves of Ponta da Piedade.

Head inland to the medieval village of Monsaraz, located in the Alentejo region. It is located on a hill with great views of the Alqueva Dam. The Monsaraz Castle offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, and nearby, you can visit the Alqueva Dam, the largest artificial lake in Europe.
