Irish Travel Boom Drives Demand for Algarve Holiday Rentals

A surge in travel between Ireland and Portugal is fuelling a fresh wave of interest in Algarve holiday rentals. From winter escapes to long-term stays and flexible work breaks, more Irish travellers are choosing the Algarve as their preferred getaway.

Recent data confirms the upward trend: over 2.2 million overnight stays were recorded by Irish travellers in Portugal early this year, up more than 5% from the previous year. Meanwhile, Portuguese authorities previously reported a 31% increase in the number of Irish citizens living in Portugal between 2022 and 2023, which signaled stronger ties between the two countries. In addition, when looked at over a longer period, it is even more astounding, in 2013, there were just 805 Irish residents in the country. While specific data for 2025 is not yet available, by 2022, this figure had escalated to 4,159, marking a 416% increase over ten years.

Stronger Connections, Longer Stays

Improved flight connectivity is one key factor. Announced additional services for summer 2025, including a new route from Shannon to Madeira and more flights from Dublin and Shannon to Faro, the gateway to the Algarve. These changes make it easier for Irish visitors to book Algarve holiday rentals, for short breaks or extended stays.

As more Irish citizens settle in Portugal, particularly in the Algarve, a growing number of holidaymakers are visiting not just for the sun, but to reconnect with family and friends who now call the region home. This personal connection adds another layer to the surge in demand for flexible, home-style holiday rentals.

Holiday Lettings in Portugal Evolve With Demand

Irish visitors are seeking flexible, comfortable accommodation. This is driving demand for self catering accommodation throughout the Algarve.

Short-term and seasonal stays are on the rise, with options ranging from holiday apartments to private villa rentals for families, digital nomads and retirees potentially testing the waters before a permanent move.

So far in 2025, there's been an increase in families and friend groups opting for larger villas in the Algarve to accommodate multi-generational holidays, milestone celebrations and reunions. Properties offering multiple bedrooms and family-friendly amenities are particularly sought after (Portugal Resident).

Conclusion

The upcoming Moving to Portugal Show in Dublin on 22 May 2025 is set to highlight property and lifestyle opportunities in Portugal. Irish travellers and future expats alike will have the chance to explore options and connect with trusted experts in the field including representatives from top Algarve resorts.

If you're considering a stay in Portugal, now is the ideal time to explore holiday rentals in the Algarve.
